No More Mr. Nice Guy

As many of you know, it was exactly 2 months to the day that I went to downtown Vancouver to spend a day and a half with my Montreal niece Rhonda (who was visiting/working) … and frankly it has taken me this long to recover from the experience.

Be honest now. When you think Canadian – don’t the words ‘nice’ and ‘polite’ immediately pop into your mind. My goodness, we even say I’m sorry when someone accidentally bumps into us – never blaming the clod who jostled us.  We Canadians are known for being the politest people on the face of the earth. I will now change that sentence from “are” to “were” the politest people on the face of the earth.  I’m here to set you all straight – NOW.

Things have changed. I was stunned. We are not that way anymore. Let me tell you exactly what happened.

Rhonda and I had a lovely dinner that evening, talked much of the night away and shared her hotel room.  In the morning I said – very politely (I am Canadian after all): You know Rhonda – you snore.

I expected a “very polite” I’m sorry or “a somewhat polite”  I hope I didn’t keep you awake but that’s not what I got – and I’m still stunned by her reply.

I’ll repeat.  Very politely I said: You know Rhonda – you snore.

She replied: I don’t care.

Rhonda:  I didn’t know saying that was even an option.

And yet it has now become my mantra: We have to get together more often. I LOVE YOU.  Auntie Joei
