Tuckahoe Slidebottle

Yes – I know.  What is a Tuckhoe Slidebottle?  Every once in a while I am so conflicted by a book – one that I am reading, not writing –  and that’s where I am right now.

The book is a collection of short stories by Neil McKinnon and was one of the finalists for the Stephen Leacock Award for humour when it first came out. I have been reading about town folks of Tuckahoe (Saskatchewan) for several weeks now. Every story is a shiny pearl and I read one story a day because I just didn’t want it to finish. Tomorrow I’ll read the last chapter and I’ll be sorry to see it go.

The year that Tuckahoe Slidebottle came out Stuart Mclean had a new book as well and that book won the coveted award. I have read a few of his books and if that new book was like the ones I had already read then Neil was robbed. Mclean’s stories were good but no where near as endearing and entertaining as Tuckahoe.

I’m sure it won’t be long before I’m rereading it.

A few months ago Neil’s second book was published. It’s called the Greatest Lover of Last Tuesday. Why don’t I read that one next, you ask?  Well Neil was a member of my writing group and for the time he was with us at Pen & Inkling we helped him edit that book so I have read and reread and reread it.  Loved it too but Tuckahoe is definitely something special.

For a GREAT read – check it out.  I’m sure you’ll fall in love with the characters like I did.  Enjoy.   Joei
